Adafruit I2C Quad Rotary Encoder Breakout with NeoPixel

The Adafruit I2C Quad Rotary Encoder Breakout lets you read up to four rotary encoders from a single board over I2C. An onboard microcontroller running Adafruit's seesaw firmware handles all pulse tracking, debouncing, and pin management — simply query the encoder values whenever you need them.

Designed in the STEMMA QT / Qwiic form factor, this breakout supports solderless I2C connections and daisy-chaining. The board accepts standard PEC11-pinout rotary encoders (not included) and features reverse-mount NeoPixels under each encoder position — visible through clear or translucent shaft encoders for colour-coded visual feedback.

Key Features

  • 4× Encoder Positions – Read up to four rotary encoders from a single breakout board
  • Seesaw I2C Interface – Onboard microcontroller handles all encoder tracking and debouncing
  • STEMMA QT / Qwiic Connectors – Solderless I2C connection with daisy-chain support
  • 4× Reverse-Mount NeoPixels – RGB LEDs visible through translucent encoder shafts, controlled over I2C
  • Interrupt Pin – Configurable INT output pulses low on rotation or button press
  • 3V & 5V Compatible – Works with both 3.3V and 5V power and logic levels
  • Up to 8 Boards on One Bus – Three address jumpers allow addresses 0x49 to 0x51 (up to 32 encoders total)
  • Breadboard-Friendly – 0.1"-spaced breakout pads for traditional wiring

Ideal For

  • Multi-encoder control panels and user interfaces
  • Audio mixers, lighting controllers, and parameter adjustment
  • Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and CircuitPython projects requiring multiple rotary inputs
  • STEMMA QT / Qwiic sensor and control chains

Package Contents

  • 1× Adafruit I2C Quad Rotary Encoder Breakout PCB (assembled and tested)
Note: Rotary encoders, header pins, and STEMMA QT cables are not included. This breakout accepts any standard PEC11-pinout rotary encoder. NeoPixels are only visible through clear or translucent encoder shafts.
