Adafruit MCP9601 (MCP96L01) I2C Thermocouple Amplifier

The Adafruit MCP9601 (MCP96L01) I2C Thermocouple Amplifier handles all the analogue complexity of thermocouple measurement over a simple I2C interface. Connect your thermocouple, wire up I2C (or use the solderless STEMMA QT connector), and read accurate temperature data from K, J, T, N, S, E, B, and R type thermocouples.

The MCP96L01 chip includes built-in cold-junction compensation, configurable over/under temperature alerts, and reports both the thermocouple (hot) and ambient chip (cold) temperatures. The breakout board features a 3.3V regulator and level shifting, so it works seamlessly with both 3.3V and 5V logic.

Key Features

  • 8 Thermocouple Types Supported – K, J, T, N, S, E, B, and R type
  • ADC Resolution – ±0.0625°C measurement resolution
  • Thermocouple Accuracy – ±2.0°C typical / ±4.0°C maximum (MCP96L01 chip accuracy, not including thermocouple tolerance)
  • I2C Interface – Simple digital output with no analogue calibration required
  • STEMMA QT / Qwiic Ports – Solderless I2C connection, no soldering needed
  • Cold-Junction Compensation – Built-in reference for accurate readings
  • Configurable Alerts – Set over/under temperature thresholds
  • 3.3V and 5V Compatible – On-board regulator and level shifting

Supported Temperature Ranges

  • K Type: −200°C to +1372°C
  • J Type: −150°C to +1200°C
  • T Type: −200°C to +400°C
  • N Type: −150°C to +1300°C
  • E Type: −200°C to +1000°C
  • S Type: +250°C to +1664°C
  • B Type: +1000°C to +1800°C
  • R Type: +250°C to +1664°C

Ideal For

  • Industrial temperature monitoring and data logging
  • Reflow oven and kiln temperature control
  • Scientific and laboratory measurement
  • Any application requiring wide-range thermocouple readings over I2C

Package Contents

  • 1× Adafruit MCP9601 (MCP96L01) Thermocouple Amplifier breakout board (with STEMMA QT / Qwiic connectors)
  • 1× 2-pin terminal block
  • 1× Header pin strip
Note: Thermocouple and STEMMA QT cable not included. Typical K-type thermocouples have ±2°C to ±6°C accuracy independent of the amplifier's resolution. Some soldering is required for the terminal block and header pins.
