Adafruit SGP30 Air Quality Sensor Breakout - VOC and eCO2

The Adafruit SGP30 is a multi-pixel MOX (metal-oxide) gas sensor from Sensirion that measures Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC) and equivalent CO2 (eCO2) for indoor air quality monitoring. With fully calibrated output signals and I2C interfacing, it provides a straightforward way to detect changes in air quality.

The sensor combines multiple metal-oxide sensing elements on a single chip along with a built-in microcontroller that handles power management, analog reading, baseline calibration, and TVOC/eCO2 calculation. Unlike the CCS811, this sensor does not require I2C clock stretching.

Key Features

  • TVOC Measurement – 0 to 60,000 ppb (parts per billion)
  • eCO2 Measurement – 0 to 60,000 ppm (equivalent CO2 calculated from H2 concentration)
  • Calibrated Output – Typical accuracy of 15% within measured values
  • Built-in Baseline Calibration – Automatic calibration tracking with ability to save/restore baselines
  • Humidity Compensation – Accept external humidity data over I2C for improved accuracy
  • I2C Interface – No clock stretching required
  • 3.3 V / 5 V Compatible – Onboard 1.8 V regulator and level shifting
Note: The SGP30 calculates eCO2 based on hydrogen concentration — it is not a true CO2 sensor. For direct CO2 measurement, consider a dedicated NDIR or photoacoustic CO2 sensor. Like all VOC/gas sensors, calibration against known sources is recommended for precise measurements.

Also Consider

Ideal For

  • Indoor air quality monitoring and trend detection
