Arduino GEMMA - Miniature wearable electronic platform

The Arduino GEMMA is a tiny wearable electronics platform developed in collaboration between Adafruit and Arduino. At just 28 mm in diameter, it packs an ATtiny85 microcontroller into a sewable, solderable package that's perfect for wearable projects, e-textiles, and compact embedded builds.

Programmable via the Arduino IDE (version 1.6.4 or higher) over USB, the GEMMA provides 3 GPIO pins with analogue input, PWM output, and hardware I2C support. Its built-in 3.3V regulator accepts USB or battery power with automatic switchover.

Key Features

  • ATtiny85 Microcontroller – 8 KB flash (~5.25 KB usable), 512 bytes SRAM, 512 bytes EEPROM at 8 MHz
  • Tiny Form Factor – Only 28 mm diameter × 7 mm thick
  • 3 GPIO Pins – 1 analogue input, 2 PWM outputs, hardware I2C
  • USB Bootloader – Program via micro-USB with the Arduino IDE
  • 3.3V Regulator – 150 mA output, up to 16V input with reverse-polarity, thermal, and current-limit protection
  • Ultra Low Power – Draws only 9 mA while running
  • Sewable Pads – Easy to sew with conductive thread or solder for wearable projects
  • Auto Power Switching – Seamlessly switches between USB and external battery power
  • On-Board LEDs – Green power LED and red Pin 1 LED
Note: The GEMMA is not fully Arduino Uno-compatible. It does not have a serial port for debugging (the serial monitor cannot send/receive data). Some USB 3.0 ports may not recognise the bootloader — use a USB 2.0 port or hub if needed. Requires Arduino IDE 1.6.4 or higher.

Ideal For

  • Wearable electronics and e-textile projects
  • Compact embedded builds where space is limited
  • Sewable LED and sensor projects
  • Quick weekend prototyping
