NeTV2 - Open Video Development Board

The NeTV2 is an open-source HDMI video development board designed as a Raspberry Pi add-on. It enables video overlay on HDMI streams — compositing your own content on top of existing video feeds from devices like media players or set-top boxes — using FPGA-based chroma-key processing.

Designed by "bunnie" Huang's Alphamax, the NeTV2 combines a Linux runtime (via the Raspberry Pi) with FPGA video processing power. The reference firmware runs Webkit on Angstrom Linux with a JavaScript/HTML UI, making application development straightforward. A built-in HTTP API with Bonjour/zeroconf discovery enables easy integration with smartphones, laptops, and other networked devices.

Key Features

  • HDMI Video Overlay – Composite web content onto existing HDMI video feeds, including encrypted streams
  • FPGA Video Processing – Chroma-key compositing with Xilinx FPGA, reprogrammable via free Webpack tools
  • JavaScript/HTML UI – Application development using Webkit on Angstrom Linux
  • HTTP API – POST-based remote control with Bonjour/zeroconf discovery
  • Raspberry Pi Add-On – Full Linux development environment via the Pi
  • Fully Open Source – Open hardware and software stack

Development Options

  • UI and application development in JavaScript/HTML (Webkit)
  • Remote control via iOS/Android reference apps using HTTP API
  • Command-line and kernel development via gcc toolchain
  • Verilog/VHDL FPGA development via Xilinx Webpack
  • Hardware modification enabled by open-source design files

Operating Modes

  • NeTV Classic Mode – Video overlays with support for encrypted HDMI streams
  • Libre Mode – Deep video processing on unencrypted feeds

Ideal For

  • HDMI video overlay and compositing projects
  • FPGA video processing development
  • Digital signage and information display
  • Open-source hardware experimentation
