Smoke Sensor - MQ-2

The MQ-2 is a smoke and combustible gas sensor manufactured by Winsen. It detects flammable gases and smoke in a concentration range of 300–10,000 ppm, with particularly high sensitivity to propane and smoke. It's widely used in domestic gas leakage alarms and portable gas detectors.

The sensing element uses tin dioxide (SnOâ‚‚), which has lower conductivity in clean air and higher conductivity when combustible gas or smoke is present. By measuring this change in conductivity with a simple voltage divider circuit, you can convert the sensor's output into usable data. Some calibration is required for accurate readings.

Key Features

  • Wide Detection Range – 300–10,000 ppm for combustible gases
  • High Sensitivity – Especially responsive to propane, smoke, methane, and hydrogen
  • SnOâ‚‚ Sensing Element – Reliable resistance-based detection principle
  • Simple Interface – Analogue output; pair with a breakout board or voltage divider circuit

Specifications

  • Sensor Model – MQ-2
  • Detectable Gases – LPG, propane, methane, hydrogen, smoke, alcohol
  • Detection Range – 300–10,000 ppm
  • Sensing Material – Tin dioxide (SnOâ‚‚)
  • Heater Voltage – 5 V

Ideal For

  • Domestic gas leak detection
  • Smoke and fire alarm projects
  • Air quality monitoring prototypes
Warning: This sensor is intended for hobbyist and prototyping use only. Do not rely on it as a sole safety device for gas leak or fire detection.
