SparkFun Roshamglo Badge Kit

The SparkFun Roshamglo is a fun, interactive badge that lets you play Rock-Paper-Scissors wirelessly with friends using infrared communication. Built around the ATtiny84 microcontroller, it features an IR LED and receiver to communicate between badges at distances up to 1.5 metres.

Simply point your badge at an opponent's Roshamglo and press the 5-way switch — left for rock, up for paper, right for scissors. The red/green LED displays the result instantly: solid green for a win, solid red for a loss, or alternating for a tie. A lanyard clip makes it easy to wear for quick-draw battles.

The kit requires minimal assembly — just solder six battery clips to the underside and insert three AAA batteries. No programming required to start playing, but the Micronucleus bootloader allows hacking and reprogramming via the Arduino IDE over USB.

Key Features

  • ATtiny84 Microcontroller – 8 KB flash (~6 KB usable), 512B SRAM, 512B EEPROM
  • IR Communication – IR LED and 38 kHz demodulating receiver for badge-to-badge play
  • 5-Way Switch – Intuitive input for rock, paper, scissors selection
  • Red/Green LED – Programmable indicator for win/lose/tie results

  • 9 Breakout Pins – Access to I/O pins including 10-bit ADC on 8 pins
  • Power Switch – On/off control to conserve battery life
  • Lanyard Clip – Wear it around your neck for easy access
